Originally from Finland, Nordic Walking is an activity which is rapidly growing in popularity. It is suitable for all people, regardless of age or sex, and is particularly good for families, since it is more fun and beneficial than ordinary walking, while it is low in cost and not difficult to master.
Nordic Walking
Have you seen people outside walking with what look like ski poles? If so, you have witnessed an activity that is becoming extremely popular in Scandinavia. Originating in Finland and with now over 480,000 Finns doing it, Nordic Walking is an activity which is rapidly growing in popularity all over the world. Why? Nordic Walking is a great way to get outdoors and reap all the benefits of physical activity without placing strain on the body, which sports such as running or jogging can. It is also a great activity for your entire family, or for enjoying with a friend, since it allows for conversation at the same time as exercising.
Why Nordic Walking?
Nordic Walking involves the use of walking poles which are like ski poles adjusted for walking on grass or harder surfaces. There are several benefits to Nordic Walking, compared to ordinary walking:
Energy consumption increases 20% compared to ordinary walking;
Heart rate increases due to added arm activity;
Muscle tension and pain in the neck and shoulders are released;
Muscles work to increase lateral mobility of the neck and spine;
Knees and joints are not aggravated (particularly good if you are overweight since load on the knees is reduced);
Use of poles increases safety in walking on slippery surfaces, which increases safety for older people.

Nordic Walking technique
Lean forward slightly while walking but make sure that you do not bend too much at the waist (tip: keep your stomach muscles tucked in and your posterior tucked under!);
Keep your poles close to your body;
Walk naturally, finding your own arm rhythm;
Hold your pole with a slightly open hand and
push with your pole behind your body at every step
Try to keep your feet more or less parallel as you walk;
Your posture will improve as your stride becomes easier and lighter
