Swedish melancholy meets American singer-songwriter music Malin Jonsson is a singer-songwriter from Vansbro in Dalarna. Even though she got airplay on Swedish radio and had songs on Svensktoppen (the Swedish top-hit list radio show) she has not gotten the recognition she deserves. Hopefully, she will get that in the future.
The album is a good mix of what I call “Swedish melancholy” and songs in the American singer-songwriter tradition; a mix of Swedish visor (traditional folk songs), American country and pop. This is a very organic album with a classic, timeless sound featuring acoustic and electric guitars, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer piano, acoustic piano and drums. Malin’s voice has a closeness and intimacy that cuts right to the heart. As a singer-songwriter and vocalist she is not afraid to show her vulnerable side and you can feel the honesty in her music. One of the highlights is the duet, “Leva Här” with Mikael Rickfors (former member of the Hollies and Grymlings). My personal favorite is the bittersweet final track, “Sorgen’s tid”, which talks about how the pain and suffering of lost love will eventually come to an end. This is the perfect album to put on during those chilly autumn and winter evenings. Malin sings in Swedish but her music speaks in all languages.
