If you haven’t got the possibility of putting up shelves in the bathroom but need storage this might be something for you. Here are two examples that my grandmother created. On is made of terry-toweling and the other with waxed cloth.

A piece of wood sewed into the top to provide a support and a hanger to place this storage where it is needed and you’re away. Get a wooden hanger and saw off the edges or use a metal hanger driven into a wooden plank. Hang this in your closet, in your shower cabin and on wall hooks in your bathroom. If you are using this item for storing items that become wet (e.g. dish-washing brush), you can make small holes in the bottom of the pockets so that the water has the possibility of running out and the pocket can dry.

Förvara i tyg på väggen

Har du ingen möjlighet att sätta upp vackra hyllor i badrummet men behöver förvaring? Från min mormor kommer dessa två exempel. En sydd av frotté och den andra av vaxduk.

En träbit insydd i toppen för stadga och en hängare för att kunna placeras där den behövs. Skaffa en hängare av trä och såga av den i ändarna eller skriva in en metallkrok i träbiten. Om den ska användas för förvaring av våta saker, tex diskborstar, kan man göra små hål i botten av fickorna så att vattnet rinner ut och fickan kan torka.

The Written Word in the Hand-made Notebook

I love to make notebooks for sketching and writing in. They pile up in the shelves and are almost never used as I find it nail-biting to set pen to paper on the first page – imagine if my first markings were ugly! Then I change my thinking and realize that I can create loads of new ones. They also make wonderful presents.

Rummage through your paper. Sometimes you can find just the thing to use where you least expect it. In my case, I found old pillow covers that had still not been unpacked, wrapped in a rough sort of paper perfect for a notebook cover.

Use A4 paper or whatever size fits with the size of your cover. In this case, I use A4 paper and fold it vertically. Folding the A4 or other sized paper against the direction of the fibers can result in the fold being thick and unco-operative. For this reason, always fold the paper with the direction of the fibers. For A4 paper this means folding vertically along the height of the paper rather than horizontally (as for A5). I need to trim the paper with a cutter and a ruler to fit the cover, but I’ll do that later.

Using a stapler that I can open right out. I press in three staples from the outside, taking care to have a soft surface underneath (preferably a soft cork pin board). I bend in the staples myself on the inside of the paper.

Remember that the more pages you have in your notebook (i.e. the larger the number of  A4 or other sized pages you bind with the stapler), the more paper you’ll have to trim away so that it doesn’t stick out from under your cover. When you work with your paper knife and ruler make sure that you work with a light hand and only take a few papers at a time with repeated movements. If you press too hard when you cut, there is quite a risk that the paper isn’t cut clean at the edges.

Det skrivna ordet i det handgjorda blocket

Jag skapar gärna anteckningsböcker för att teckna och skriva i. De radar upp sig i hyllan och blir nästan aldrig använda, det är ju så läskigt att sätta pennan på det första arket – tänk om det blir fult! Men så ändrar jag min tanke och tänker att jag kan göra massor av nya. De blir också utmärkta presenter att ge bort.

Leta runt bland dina papper. Ibland kan man hitta material där man minst anar det. Äldre örngott som ännu inte var uppackade låg instoppade i lite grövre papper. Använd A4 eller anpassa storleken efter det som ska bli omslag. I detta fall viker jag A4 papperet på höjden. Om du viker ett papper mot fiberriktningen kan det lätt bli tjockt och vågigt i falsen (viket). Därför viker man längs med fiberriktningen. På ett A4 innebär detta att man bäst viker det längs med höjden och inte på mitten (A5). Det behöver beskäras lite men det gör jag senare med en kniv och stållinjal.

Med en häftklammer, som fälls ut, trycker jag in tre klamrar från utsidan mot ett mjukt underlag, gärna en anslagstavla (kork) och sedan viker jag in klamrarna från insidan.

Tänk på att ju tjockare pappersbunt, desto mer kommer att sticka ut på bredden, åtgärda genom att beskära kanterna. När du arbetar med mattkniven och stållinjalen ska du vara lätt på handen och bara skära igenom några få papper åt gången med upprepade rörelser. Om man tar i för hårt är det lätt hänt att papperet rispas upp i kanterna.

Here is an easy way to make a Christmas star to hang in your window:

If your egg cartons are shaped like mine (see below) this will work well. Tear out the bit in the middle in one piece.

Sew together the edges and attach a thread to hang up the star in the window or wherever you like. Try to get it to hang as straight as possible.

If you want to develop the concept, as I think you just might, I recommend a papier-mache technique with wallpaper glue and newspaper which you then paint. Your creation can become very pretty indeed with some silk paper in different colors. Experiment away!

Paste
1 cup cold water
1 cup flour
2 1/2 cups boiling water
3/4 tsp. oil of wintergreen

Mix the cold water and flour together, stirring until smooth. Add the boiling water and mix well. Pour the mixture into the top of a double boiler. Cook over low heat until smooth. Remove from heat. When the mixture is cool, add the oil of wintergreen.

Ett enkelt sätt att på egen hand göra en julstjärna att hänga i fönstret:

Äggkartong, den större varianten, riv ut delen i mitten i ett stycke.

Sy ihop ändarna och fäst en tråd att hänga upp stjärnan på önskad höjd. Försök att få den så rakt som möjligt.

Om man vill utveckla konceptet, som jag tänker mig att man kanske vill, rekommenderar jag papier-machie teknik med tapetklister och tidningspapper som man sedan målar. Vackert kan det också bli med tunt silkespapper i olika färger. Experimentera er fram!

All that metal

Tin cans in waiting to be recycled insist upon my attention. What could one use them for? We try to purchase paper-packaged goods whenever possible – it seems more environmentally friendly. One could start crushing tomatoes. Doesn’t sound too hard, does it?

Changing the appearance of the tins seems like a predictable way to seize upon the issue, so why not start there? One approach is simply to wash the tins in warm water so that the label swims off and an attractive round stripe pattern emerges. If you have different types of tin cans, you’ll notice that they have different metallic shades.

An alternative is to handle them as with the boxes in my previous entry: paint them (talk to your local paint shop about water-based environmentally-friendly paints that work on metallic surfaces) or paste decorative paper onto the outer surface. Personally, I am hopelessly in devoted to a Japanese paper called Chiyogami (Yuzen). I wash out the tins thoroughly, take out the pliers and turn the sharp metal edges inward. Using glue I attach the new paper to the old tin label. Further options are to decorate the inside of the tin with more modest paper and even put a bit of felt on the bottom to protect the surface that it will stand on.

Areas of Use: Jewelry storage, desk equipment (pens, pencils, scissors, etc.), loose receipts, keys, tickets, glasses, spices (I know there are plastic tops that fit these tins but I don’t know where one can find them), as gift containers for little cookies, nuts and dried fruits (Check Julie’s Kitchen for Little Cookies!). What might you use your tins for?

I thought also of asking my local pizzeria whether I can take over their super-sized tin cans. Those would be very decorative for my children’s toy building blocks and my long paint brushes. Perfect as drums for my son, or perhaps they will become something else that he can climb up on? Hmmm…maybe we’ll have pizza tonight.

All denna plåt

Plåtburkar i väntan på återvinning pockar på min uppmärksamhet. Vad skulle man kunna använda dem till? Vi försöker att handla pappersförpackningar då det går, det är väl ändå det miljövänligare alternativet? Man kan ju börja krossa tomater själv, det är ju inte ens svårt!

Ändra utseendet känns som en förutsägbar angreppsvinkel så jag börjar där. Antingen genom att bara tvätta dem i hett vatten så att etiketten lossnar och en vackert randig plåtlyster framträder. Har man olika sorters plåtburkar finner man snart att de alla har olika nyanser av plåt.

Eller så gör man som med lådorna i föregående inlägg: man målar dem med färg (hör med din färghandlare om vattenlösliga, miljövänliga alternativ som fäster på plåt) eller limmar dekorativt papper på burken. Själv är jag ändlöst förtjust i de japanska papperna, Chiyogami (Yuzen). Jag diskar ur burkarna ordentligt. Tar en tång och trycker in den vassa kanten på insidan. Med lim fäster jag papperet på burkens gamla etikett. Om man vill kan man klä insidan med enklare papper och även sätta en bit sammetstyg i botten för att skydda underlaget.

Användningsområden Förvaring av smycken, allt för skrivbordet (pennor, saxar osv) kvitton som behöver sparas, nycklar, biljetter, glasögon, kryddor (jag vet att det finns plastlock som passar till plåtburkar, men vart får man tag i dessa?), som presentburkar för pepparkakor, nötter och torkad frukt (Kolla in Julie’s Kitchen receptet på Little Cookies!). Vad skulle du använda dina burkar till?

Jag tänker också att jag ska fråga min pizzabagare om jag kan överta några av deras enormt stora plåtburkar. Dessa skulle bli väldigt dekorativa för barnens klossar och mina stora målarpenslar. Perfekt som trumma till min son, eller blir det bara något ytterligare han kan använda att klättra på. Hmm..kanske det blir en pizza till middag.

Boxes for all flavours

I’m privileged to have a green grocery in my neighborhood. They stock the finest of fresh fruits and vegetables from all over the world. Early in the mornings they unpack their daily deliveries and a pile of empty cardboard boxes starts to build up on the street beside the store. I must have passed it more than a hundred times without even noticing, but one morning there they were: two nice boxes for my children’s toys.

I pass by there every morning to and from the childrens’ day care. My favorites are the boxes for tomatoes. As always when you start to look into things a pattern seems to develop. For tomatoes the box colors are black, white and red, regardless of brand. Oh, how beautiful they are piled up in my home! My husband wonders where this will end. I argue for the box’s sake: I’ll use them for collecting newspapers that will be recycled, preferably with the box too if I decide to change vegetable type. I use it for gathering toys in the evening, for small things, for clothing and for storing CD’s and DVD’s. Fabrics that are waiting to be used rest for a while in the box for capsicum.

If you don’t like the appearances of these boxes there are several ways of changing them. For example, you can paint them in your favorite color. For the box in the picture below I used some old wallpaper. Fabrics too make a nice surface. If you use paper or wallpaper use the recipe below for an environmental friendly bookbinder paste. To make a small serving combine the following:

2/3 cup cold water
2 tablespoons wheat starch or flour

Whisk water and flour until you have eliminated the lumps. Cook for about 10 minutes and stir constantly to prevent the paste from burning the bottom of your pot. Let it cool. When you use it make sure to mix it smooth so that it spreads easily. It will keep for a week and even a little longer if you keep it in the refrigerator.

I’m suddenly reminded of the boxes I found in a Chinese food shop. The things that were stored in them were not intresting but the boxes were wonderful. I asked if I could buy the boxes and as they otherwise would have been thrown away I could buy them very cheaply. While taking the photograph just now I was reminded of how empty they are…

Jag har förmånen att ha en grönsakshandlare i mitt kvarter. De saluför fina, utvalda frukter och grönsaker från hela världen. Tidigt varje morgon packar de upp de dagliga leveranserna och tomma pappkartonger läggs på hög utanför butiken i väntan på returpappersinsamlingen. Jag måste ha gått förbi där hundratals gånger utan att ens lägga märke till detta men en morgon så fanns de bara där: två fina lådor för mina barns leksaker.

Jag går förbi där varje morgon till och från dagis. Mina favoriter är lådorna för tomater. Som alltid då man får upp ögonen för något så utkristalliseras ett mönster. Tomatlådorna är svarta, vita och röda, detta gäller alla tomatsorter. Åh, vad fina de är nu när de läggs på hög i mitt hem! Min man undrar vart detta kommer att sluta. Jag argumenterar för lådornas existens: Jag ska använda de för att samla tidningar som ska återanvändas, gärna med lådan också om jag bestämmer mig för att byta till en annan sorts låda. Jag använder de för att samla leksaker inför kvällen, för små saker, för kläder och för CD och DVD. Tyger som väntar på att få bli något vilar en stund i en låda för paprikor.

Om du inte tycker om utseendet på lådorna så finns det oändliga sätt att ändra på det. Du kan exempelvis måla dem i din favoritfärg. Jag har klätt in en låda i en gammal tapet. Att använda tyger ger lådan en fin yta. Om du använder papper eller tapeter så kan du koka bokbindarens miljövänliga klister. För en lite portion gör följande:

2/3 dl kallt vatten
2 tsk mjöl

Vispa vatten och mjöl tills du har fått bort alla klumpar. Koka i 10 minuter och rör hela tiden så att det inte bränner fast i botten av kastrullen. Låt det svalna. När du vill använda klistret så kan du röra det föst så att det sedan sprider sig lätt. Det håller i en vecka och ibland lite längre om du ställer det i kylskåpet.

Nu blev jag påmind om de små askar jag hittade i en kinesisk butik. Sakerna som var i lådorna var inte så intressanta men askarna var jättefina. Jag frågade om jag kunde köpa dem eftersom de annars skulle kastas bort och jag fick göra det för en väldigt liten summa. När jag tog fotot just nu blev jag också påmind om hur tomma de är…
