Bells and Crocheted Lace

Now that summer is starting it’s time to have another sort through all of those old Christmas decorations and consider whether they are really going to be used ever again or just lie there in a drawer during the coming winter season. I found an old Christmas decoration from which I could easily detach the bells and reuse them to make another year-round decoration.

In the hidden corners of my home I find crumpled up crocheted lace from my maternal grandmother which I often wonder what to use for. Perhaps I could combine the bells and the lace? One could attach this combination to the door so that it plings nicely each time that one opens the door. Why not make a bell chime that can hang on the balcony or in a tree in the garden (instead of a wind chime). In this way one can shed the symbolic value of bells and renew their function, just letting them be bells.

Inspired by how quick this was to do, I tried with some old cow bells.

However, I wasn’t so pleased with this experiment and thought that the old, worn rope fit better with the cow bells. One doesn’t have to change everything after all!

Klockor och virkad spets

Nu så här i början av sommaren är det väl dags att plocka fram julprydnader och fundera om de verkligen kommer att användas igen eller bara ligga kvar i lådan även under kommande jular. Jag hittade en julprydnad där man enkelt kunde knyta loss klockorna som jag tänker använda till att göra en dekoration.

I mina gömmor finns en mängd knypplade och virkade spetsar från min mormor som jag ofta funderar över vad jag ska använda till. Kanske en kombination av dessa? Om man kan fästa den vid en dörr så att det pinglar till varje gång man stänger eller öppnar dörren. Eller varför inte göra ett klockspel som får hänga på balkongen eller i ett träd i trädgården (istället för ett vindspel). Klockornas funktion och mening bör väl lyftas fram och få möjliga tillfällen till att vara just klockor, inte bara symboler.

Inspirerad av hur snabbt detta gick att färdigställa så provade jag också med några gamla koskällor.

Men här ångrar jag mig, det gamla slitna snöret var mycket vackrare tillsammans med klockorna. Allt behöver alltså inte förändras.

The Multi-Purpose Dandelion

If you are having to wait around and find yourself standing next to a patch of dandelions, you can enjoy the time instead by crafting the stalks into a long necklance. Hopefully you’ll have a friend with you so that you can make a really long necklace and have fun with it together!

When I was a child, my friends and I used to split the stalks of dandelions and place them in water. I just tried this again and was amazed at how quickly they rolled themselves up and became beautiful decorations in water.

The stalks are not dangerous to eat and can be used to beautify a glass or pitcher of cordial. For both people and plants in the house it is a very good idea to have a glass of water standing in the main room, so why not fill a glass bowl with water, float some pretty dandelion stalks in it and place it at the windowsill?

Julie Lindahl has created a yummy recipe with dandelion leaves which are nature’s gift to your kidney’s in the spring! Dandelion leaves are known for their cleansing effect! Try her dandelion pesto which is a perfect sauce for your garden barbecues (including vegetarian barbecues!).

Föränderlig Maskros

Om man någon gång behöver vänta och befinner sig nära en äng av maskrosor så kan man sätta ihop stjälkar av maskrosor för att skapa ett långt halsband. Förhoppningsvis har man en vän med sig och man kan båda få utrymme att sedan svänga runt i halsbandet.

När jag var liten brukade  jag och mina vänner dra isär stjälken av maskrosor och remsorna lade man sedan i vatten. Jag gjorde det nu på nytt och förundrades över hur snabbt och vackert de krullar ihop sig då de hamnat i vattnet.

Stjälken är ofarlig att äta och kan i denna vackra krullform användas som dekoration i glas med saft eller liknande.  Det är mycket bra för växter och människor att ha ett glas vatten stående i rum inomhus så varför inte fylla en glasskål med vatten och remsor av maskrosstjälkar och placera den i fönstret.

Min katt lockades också till att smaka lite maskrosvatten!

A Reason to Celebrate

We celebrate our twins’ 2nd birthday with a home-baked cake. Sockerkaka (the ever-popular Swedish basic pound cake) with raspberries, strawberries, bananas, pineapple and whipped cream. When I cut off the tops of the strawberries I notice that they resemble flowers. What happens to them? Of course they become the decoration for the top of the cake.

Birthdays, names days (celebrating a day assigned to your name on the calendar – a tradition in some of the Nordic countries), weddings, christenings, Mother’s Day (31 May), national/independence days (17 May in Norway and 6 June in Sweden). There are many reasons to celebrate at this time of year.

What can one celebrate with that doesn’t require hours in the kitchen but can still be appetizing and appealing to the eye?

Anledning till att fira

Vi firar två-årsdagen med hembakad tårta. Sockerkaka, hallon, jordgubbar, banan, ananas och grädde. Då jag skar av jordgubbarnas toppar märkte jag att topparna liknade blommor. Detta fick bli tårtornas dekoration på toppen.

Födelsedagar, namnsdagar, bröllop, dop, Mors dag 10/5, nationaldagarna; Norge den 17 maj och Sverige den 6 juni. Det finns många anledningar att fira.

Vad kan man dekorera med som inte behöver bli så avancerat men ändå aptitligt och vackert?

Sorting Rack for Miscellaneous Items

There are loads of solutions for gathering and keeping track of post cards, photos, business cards, recipes, letters, receipts and other miscellaneous things. In my suggestion, you see everything! This unique item sorter is a reminder of things that need to be done, bills that need to be paid, people that need to be contacted, interesting web pages that need to be visited and most of all a reminder of that special event.

I used a wooden plank and thin rope made of natural material, and began winding the rope around the plank. Consider varying the size of the plank and choosing rope in different thicknesses, material and color to create different and unique sorters for different types of paper and other items.

One way of hanging up the item sorter is to tie a bit of rope around the rope already wound around the back of the plank.

Use a thicker bit of carton if you want a light sorter to hang up on the wall, in contrast to a wooden plank which requires stronger hanging devices. The carton or the plank can be painted and decorated to fit in with your room or the wall where it will hang. A simpler option is to just have your sorter lying on the table holding business cards or other essential items (as below!), for instance.

Rephylla för samlade ting

Att samla och ha koll på vykort, foton, visitkort, menyer, brev, räkningar, diverse andra papperslappar finns det massor av lösningar på. I mitt förslag blir allt synligt. En unik rephylla blir en påminnelse om saker som bör göras, räkningar som ska betalas, människor att kontakta, spännande internetsidor att kolla och framför allt en påminnelse om den där speciella händelsen.

Jag använde en planka och snöre av naturmaterial och började vira snöret runt plankan. Tänk på att variera storlek på plankan och välj snören i olika tjocklekar, material och färg, och skapa olika unika rephyllor för olika ändamål.

Ett sätt att hänga rephyllan horisontellt skapas av en bit snöre på baksidan.

Använd en tjockare bit kartong om du vill ha en lätt rephylla att hänga upp på väggen till skillnad från en planka av trä som kräver starkare upphängningsanordning. Kartong eller planka kan målas och dekoreras för att passa in i rummet eller på väggen där den ska hängas. En mindre variant kan ju också ligga på bordet och innehålla exempelvis visitkort.

Store in Fabric on the Walls

If you haven’t got the possibility of putting up shelves in the bathroom but need storage this might be something for you. Here are two examples that my grandmother created. On is made of terry-toweling and the other with waxed cloth.

A piece of wood sewed into the top to provide a support and a hanger to place this storage where it is needed and you’re away. Get a wooden hanger and saw off the edges or use a metal hanger driven into a wooden plank. Hang this in your closet, in your shower cabin and on wall hooks in your bathroom. If you are using this item for storing items that become wet (e.g. dish-washing brush), you can make small holes in the bottom of the pockets so that the water has the possibility of running out and the pocket can dry.

Förvara i tyg på väggen

Har du ingen möjlighet att sätta upp vackra hyllor i badrummet men behöver förvaring? Från min mormor kommer dessa två exempel. En sydd av frotté och den andra av vaxduk.

En träbit insydd i toppen för stadga och en hängare för att kunna placeras där den behövs. Skaffa en hängare av trä och såga av den i ändarna eller skriva in en metallkrok i träbiten. Om den ska användas för förvaring av våta saker, tex diskborstar, kan man göra små hål i botten av fickorna så att vattnet rinner ut och fickan kan torka.

Paper-stars

Here is an easy way to make a Christmas star to hang in your window:

If your egg cartons are shaped like mine (see below) this will work well. Tear out the bit in the middle in one piece.

Sew together the edges and attach a thread to hang up the star in the window or wherever you like. Try to get it to hang as straight as possible.

If you want to develop the concept, as I think you just might, I recommend a papier-mache technique with wallpaper glue and newspaper which you then paint. Your creation can become very pretty indeed with some silk paper in different colors. Experiment away!

Paste
1 cup cold water
1 cup flour
2 1/2 cups boiling water
3/4 tsp. oil of wintergreen

Mix the cold water and flour together, stirring until smooth. Add the boiling water and mix well. Pour the mixture into the top of a double boiler. Cook over low heat until smooth. Remove from heat. When the mixture is cool, add the oil of wintergreen.

Ett enkelt sätt att på egen hand göra en julstjärna att hänga i fönstret:

Äggkartong, den större varianten, riv ut delen i mitten i ett stycke.

Sy ihop ändarna och fäst en tråd att hänga upp stjärnan på önskad höjd. Försök att få den så rakt som möjligt.

Om man vill utveckla konceptet, som jag tänker mig att man kanske vill, rekommenderar jag papier-machie teknik med tapetklister och tidningspapper som man sedan målar. Vackert kan det också bli med tunt silkespapper i olika färger. Experimentera er fram!
